BACKGROUND
Institute of education for disabled people is an
indigenous international organization based in
Nairobi Kenya with sub-offices in Mogadishu and
merca district, Somalia. The organization was
established in the year 1993 as welfare society by
the east African communities with disabilities due
to serious outcry by the people, they needed a
strong organization that will voice, represent and
articulate their needs.
The
overall goal of IEDP is to address issues,
concerns, needs and social-economic welfare of the
disabled persons in the region. The organization
particularly targets the sensitization of the
disabled people on education Health, campaigns and
Advocating for the appropriate legislation for the
persons with disabilities in the region.
IEDP
aims to build confidence, raise self-esteem and
empower the community it works with to participate
fully in their own affairs and decision making to
facilitate community based projects on disability.
The organization aims at bring together the local
community with their expertise and experience and
other development agencies with their resource to
confront ignorance, diseases and poor living of the
disabled person in Somalia.
The
organization has developed special concern for the
disabled people and destitute children, the
organization has also emergency response to woman
and children affected by natural and man-made
disasters in the area and advocacy for change of
unjust socio-economic and political structures that
affect the communities it works with and this is
perceived by other grouping to be against the
disrespect for the religious, gender sensitivity.
IEDP
forms the basis for networking with other civil
society organization both at the local and
International level to create a resource centre and
forums for discussion, exchange ideas on problems
affecting the horn Africa societies.
